Safe travels ahead for 3900 South

(Cottonwood/Holladay Journal) Many residents have made it a habit to avoid 3900 South and Highland Drive since late summer for the massive road construction taking place. The $4 million project is expected to be completed in summer 2010 and city officials hope residents are encouraged to utilize the sidewalk and bike path that will be available.

"This project has been talked about and in the design phase for the past six years," said contracted City Engineer Tosh Cano.

Funded by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009, this "shovel-ready" project began in August. The reconstruction project contracted to Geneva Rock included the installation of curb, gutter, sidewalk and storm drains.

Crews have completed the north side of 3900 South and the storm drain between 2000 and 1860 East. Currently crews are focused on the storm drain on the south side of 3900 South by 2100 East.

"Before this project commenced, there was no sidewalk between 2300 East and 1860 East," said Cano. "This will really benefit the residents because there will not only be a sidewalk all the way to Highland Drive, but also a bike path."

In the spring, crews will be excavating the road, installing the road base and concrete. Estimated completion is the end of April 2010 with the final inspection due June 30, 2010.
